CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The kiss—it happened. When I get home, I pinch myself again, quite literally, and once more wondering if, in fact, this wasn’t all a daydream where Aiden Ford was kissing me and the Avengers show up to wish me a happy birthday.

But no, real as the hair on my head, as tangible as you like it.

When it comes time for our next driving lesson, it passes by with very little driving at all.

We’re back in the old mall parking lot in our usual corner, though we’ve migrated from the front seats to the back.

It’s funny how fast I’ve gotten used to this thing that was once such an abstract concept to me. It starts with a cautious pressing of the lips together, a test where usually one of us bumps the nose of the other.

We laugh, as is customary, and stare into each’s others eyes, the afternoon light turning Aiden’s a shimmery, cobalt blue today. You don’t need the James Webb when you’ve got eyes like that to look at.

So there’s this first test of a kiss. It’s more the kiss of a summer breeze, sunlight touching the back of your hand. But one is never enough. We go in for another and this one deepens until the urgency builds and our tongues touch, icky in any other circumstance but somehow completely natural here.

I taste the Cokes we had from the gas station around the corner, the sugary tell of it on Aiden’s lips.

We kiss and it feels like forever, that infinite ocean I picture in my mind stretching on and on and on.

It’s time travel, too. In the back seat of the Mustang time slows and quickens, shadows stretching out around us until they engulf the car completely and we emerge two entirely different people.

This is the power of it, I realize. This is why people get addicted.

His fingers dance along the side of my neck, tiptoeing upwards to my hairline and walking around the back of my head.

“That tickles,” I tell him, stroking his arm. That’s one thing I’ve come to love the most—the strength of his arms around me. In that cocoon of his embrace, I really do feel invincible.

“How about this?” he asks, bringing his lips to my ear and blowing softly at the outer shell of it.

I quiver in position, doing my best not to seem like a complete push-over that a simple whisper could undo me.

I bring my lips to his and deepen the pressure, pushing him back and climbing into his lap with my hands around his neck. “Not so mighty now, are you, Thor?”

He flips me back over with ease until I’m lying on my back across the rear seat staring up at his stupid face and its stupid perfection.

“How’s your head?” I ask.

He gives me a quizzical look. “You think my concussion is the reason we’re getting together?”

I shrug there. “The quarterback and the nerd. I don’t know what you see in me. I’m not exactly a social step up.”

“I couldn’t care less about the social ladder.
